Kids Martial Arts

Q: “Is Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do a skill / talent that will give my child pride and confidence?”

Yes! A lot of kids perform their martial arts moves in talent shows and other things. Their friends are always blown away. The positive feedback children receive helps build their self-esteem and confidence. Kids feel good knowing they can do something that's "cool and special."

Q: “How old should my child be to start Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do?”

Any age! Most kids range from 5 to teenagers, but we have kids who are younger, too. Classes are customized to suit children of different ages. A teenager receives very different treatment than a 6 year old, for example.

Q: “Does Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do make kids physically aggressive?”

No way! Martial Arts is about peace, harmony and diplomacy. It teaches children how to AVOID fights - not pick them.

Q: “Can my child get injured doing Martial Arts like Karate?”

As a parent, I'm sure you've seen that kids can get injured doing just about anything. Martial Arts is no different, however we take safety very seriously here. Yes, injuries do sometimes happen. But we do everything in our power to avoid them. We do special exercises and stretches to make your child's body limber and flexible.

Q: “Do kids enjoy Martial Arts like Karate? Do they stick with it for a while?”

Kids have a blast here. There's smiling and laughter throughout every class. We have our moments of intense concentration and focus... but we always balance things out with fun and games to keep everything alive and light.

Q: “Do boys AND girls take Martial Arts like Karate?”

Yes! We have a good mix of both girls and boys in our kids martial arts classes! Some people think that the boys are much “stronger and tougher,” but in reality this is not true. In fact, often girls are the stronger ones!

Q: “My child isn't athletic. Can they still participate in Martial Arts if they're not athletic?”

Yes! In fact, Martial Arts is a beacon of light for kids who just don't fit into team sports. Kids who couldn’t throw a ball well or run fast find that Martial Arts is accessible to them. It's something they excel at, and as a result, their confidence soars. Plus...no one is left out or sits on the bench at Richmond Martial Arts! We make sure everyone gets personal time to work on specific needs for success!

Krav Maga

Q: “What kind of physical shape do I need to be in?”

Any! We have Krav Maga students who are in great shape, and others who aren't. Everyone has a great experience, and learns a ton in every class. Those who start out in not-so-great shape often get in shape very quickly. So if this is you, have no fear! Just come and enjoy Krav Maga.

Q: “I have a medical condition / past injury. Can I still take Krav Maga?”

Most likely, the answer is yes. Speak to your doctor, and let us know what he / she says. We'll gladly work with what your doctor has to say to provide you with a safe, fun experience.

Q: “Are these classes violent? Can I get hurt?”

People often associate martial arts with violence. After all, you're learning self-defense techniques. However, there's a big difference between self-defense and violence.

Self-defense means you seek a peaceful way of life, only defending yourself if you absolutely have to. Violence means seeking out hostile situations.

While injury is possible with any form of exercise - we're proud to say that injuries are very rare here. We go to extreme lengths to make sure you learn Krav Maga in a safe, effective way.

Q: “What's the environment of these classes like? Are they fun? Serious? Etc.?”

Our classes are a good mixture of fun & focus. Every class has moments of serious concentration, blended with sheer fun & laughter. After all, all work and no play makes for boring Krav Maga classes!

Kickboxing

Q: "What type of classes do you offer? (Group or private?)"

Both! Most members opt for group classes, but feel free to ask any of our instructors for more info on private sessions.

Q: “How many people will be in my class?”

You can probably expect about 15-30 people in your class. It's a really great group full of positive people excited about losing weight. You'll fit right in.

Q: “Are there other beginners in the classes?”

Yes, classes are full of people of all experience levels - including total beginners.

Q: “Can you help me with my eating / nutrition?”

Absolutely. We offer nutritional guidance as part of your membership (at no additional cost).

Q: “Is this similar to 'cardio kickboxing'?”

No, our classes are extremely interactive, and involve real-life boxing equipment like punching bags & gloves. This is nothing like cardio kickboxing!
